Swyncombe won the toss and elected to field on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Lewknor, the new home of Sydenham CC. Swyncombe walked out on to the pitch and typified a village cricket team with a 50 year age gap between the youngest and oldest players. The Sydenham openers batted steadily until Trinder took a wicket in a maiden over.
Unfortunately for Swyncombe this unleashed Lang for Sydenham who hit 58 runs in quick succession including 4 fours and 4 sixes. It was only the tempting spin bowling of Goodall that eventually trapped Lang and halted the Sydenham boundary onslaught. Sydenham ended their allotted 35 overs on 148-8. Swyncombe’s star performer bowler was Trinder, 7 overs, 4 maidens, including 2 wicket maidens, 3 wickets for 14 runs.

If Goodall provided the match turning wicket, Domnick and Bayley provided the match winning partnership, scoring 102 before Domnick retired with an injury after hitting a half century. Bayley went on to score 63 not out and would certainly get my vote for man of the match, as he usually bats lower down the order!

On a showery Sunday afternoon in Cholsey, Hope returned to the Swyncombe side after finishing his Biology degree at Exeter University, putting in a good performance with bat and ball.

Cholsey won the toss and elected to bat on what can only be described as an interesting wicket! Cholsey opener Haigh batted well until an athletic one handed, diving catch by Regent at extra cover halted his advance before reaching his half century. Swyncombe bowlers continued to bowl well through the innings and eventually Cholsey were all out for 128. 

After tea Swyncombe made steady progress and reached 89 for 3 off 22 overs. Everything looked on track for a comfortable victory until some middle order madness, in which Swyncombe lost 4 wickets for 8 runs. Hunt steadied the ship and Holder held on to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with 10 balls remaining.

Swyncombe lost the toss against Old Suttonians and made hard work of some good early bowling by Gulzal and Curtis. Half Centuries by openers Clive Dominick 50 and Goodall who batted throughout for 68 eventually helped push the score to a defendable 163 for 5.

 After a fast scoring start Old Suttonians found themselves 39 for 3 with Gulzal and Curtis back in partnership. A quick fire stand of 73 off 10 overs put Old Suttonians in a match winning position before Goodall bowled Gulzal for 35 and Bailey had Curtis caught on the boundary 5 overs later for 68. With 19 required off 9 overs, the introduction of 13 year leg spin bowler Keith Dominick with 3 wickets for 15 runs brought about an Old Suttonian collapse to 156 all out.

This 40 over match was held in tricky conditions; the square fair, but skiddy; the outfield moist and slow, the atmosphere overcast and threatening. Swyncombe won the toss and elected to bat. Hope & Goodall put on a measured opening partnership of 44 until Goodall was run out.

L.Percival signalled a change in tactic, coming in at number 3 and brandishing his new Mongoose, he went about demonstrating to Hope a more aerial attacking style.  Hope was quick to follow his new batting partners approach and their hard-hitting, hard-running partnership of 129 runs put Swyncombe on course for a teatime total of 203 for 4. Hope finished his 40 over innings on 91 runs not out.

Sutton Courtney’s opening pair struggled to make runs in the first 10 overs, with a strike rate of just 2 an over.  Swyncombe’s opening bowlers of Hunt & J Percival, seemed destined to get the break through for Swyncombe and it came in the 10th over with an outstanding reflex catch at gully be Joynes off the bowling of Percival. Hunt got his wicket reward in his 7th over, finishing his allotted overs 8 overs with 3 maidens, 1 wicket for 10 runs.

A dogged performance by Patel and Nav kept Sutton Courtney in this match, but as the required run rate increased so did the pairs need to take chances. Both eventually being caught! Although wickets started to consistently fall Sutton Courtney’s tail refused to roll over, and they batted out their forty overs 115 for 9 wickets.

The Swyncombe openers made patient progress off some good early bowling by Carter and Jackson. It took a change of bowler in the 15th over to get the initial breakthrough with the inform Domnick being bowled for 28. Wickets continued to fall but Hope batting at three was in the mood to stick around on a gloomy afternoon and put on a good 6th wicket partnership of 80 with Collins to set Swyncombe on the course to a respectable total. Hope had the opportunity to complete his century with the final ball of the innings but could not find the boundary for the 17th time and a hurried single left him on 97 not out and Swyncombe on 188 for 8 off the allotted 35 overs.

Swyncombe wished they had opted for wet weather gear as the English drizzle came down after tea, but they put on a dogged fielding display in difficult conditions. Hunt and Trinder worked well in partnership and took the first four wickets cheaply leaving Ewelme 45 for 4. Early Swyncombe pressure could not remove the patient batting display by Ewelme’s opener Wright until a change of pace saw Day claim his wicket for 41. Well rested after his innings Hope picked up three wickets for 11 runs until Matthews batting at 9 decided boundaries were the only option. A quick fire 30, including five 4's brought respectability to the total before Matthews was caught behind off the bowling of Collins, who picked up the final two wickets ending Ewelme’s innings on 124 all out.

Having travelled this land through heavily leaden skies, Swyncombe welcomed the Archery Taveners for their annual trip to the Chilterns. A London team started by three university friends nearly 40 years ago, travelled from as far north as Lake Windermere and as far south as the pebbly beaches of Brighton, for this keenly contested affair.

Swyncombe won the toss and decided to field. The “three stooges” of Hunt, Collins and Henderson were in no mood to trade runs for wickets and saw off the Taverners opening four batsmen for 42 runs, all three eventually finishing with a brace of wickets. The Taverners middle order dug in and good batting performances from Newby and J Bungard took the visitors past 100.  A good all round performance in the field, including two full length diving catches, numerous  boundary slides and 2 wickets for Goodall pinned the visitors back to 137 all out.

After tea the Taveners opening bowlers Brook and Derpear were also in no mood to give runs away. 5 maidens in the first 8 overs meant Swyncombe openers needed to wait for the first bowling change to put some runs on the board. Domnick partnered with both Goodall and Henderson for his 56.  By the time the 4th wicket fell Swyncombe had put themselves in a strong position needing  31 runs to win, with 6 wickets in hand and enough time as 10 overs remained. However, the Taverners spinner duo of Bungard and Gibson had other ideas. With an archers accuracy they sliced through the tail of the Swyncombe batting order. As the 9th wicket fell Swyncombe needed 2 to win. Poised on the edge of their seats the Swyncombe team held their collective breath as Bayley blocked his first ball, but nudged the second for a single and, a huge sigh of relief swept over the Swyncombe team as a draw was certain. The very next ball Bungard took his 5th wicket and Taveners 6th caught and bowled wicket to tie the game on 137 runs each. This only went on to prove that  “Cricket was the only and real winner today”.

Swyncombe won the toss and decided to field in the sunshine at Moulsford. After a quick breakthrough by Collins in the 3rd over, subsequent Moulsford batsmen were happy to conserve energy by hitting numerous 6s and 4s and Moulsford reached 76 for 2 off 14 overs. The total could have been significantly higher, but for an outstanding fielding performance by Johnson, who consistently stopped many well timed balls heading for certain boundaries and culminated in a magnificent 30 yard bullet throw to run out Allen who put in a dogged defence at the crease. As Swyncombe swapped pace for spin, wickets started to fall in quick succession and the afternoon sun dried up the Moulsford runs to a slow trickle. The spin twins of Vines and Goodall both took 3 wickets each for a combined total of 24 runs and reduced Moulsford to 109 all out.

Swyncombe’s middle order and tail was not needed today after good batting performances from Domnick, Hunt and Johnson. The patient early batting was rewarded with numerous boundaries in the middle overs, allowing Swyncombe to run down the Moulsford total with 6 overs and 7 wickets in hand. The win continued Swyncombe’s unbeaten start to the 2011 season.

Swyncombe won the toss and elected to field with a strong 7 man bowling attack. Hope took the first wicket in the 3rd over when he bowled Keeble for 8 runs, before Hunt added the wicket of Strange in the 10th over. A change in the bowling saw Collins take the wickets of Keeble and Crowther, both lbw in consecutive balls. Collins missed his hat trick but Crowmarsh were reduced to 33 for 4 wickets. The remaining Crowmarsh batsmen offered little resistance to some good bowling and with 6 different Swyncombe wicket takers Crowmarsh were all out in the 27th over for 76.

Crowmarsh understandably disappointed by their batting performance were fired up at the restart and left Swyncombe reeling on 3 for 10 off the first 4 overs. Like a mirror image of Collins for Swyncombe, Fanstone had an opportunity for a hat trick in his second over but again failed to convert. Both opening bowlers, Fanstone and Crowther finished their allotted overs with figures that would usually win matches and after 14 overs of which 7 were maidens, Swyncombe were 26 for 4 wickets. Hope steadied the batting with all his 20 runs coming from boundaries and then Trinder partnering Collins and Hunt doggedly ran down the Crowmarsh total in the 21st over, finishing on 23 not out.

Swyncombe enjoyed a confident win over Sonning Common Village with Sam Hope delivering with bat and ball. Swyncombe took the first wicket in the 3rd over with an excellent catch in the covers by Henderson off the bowling of Hope. A double change of bowlers in the 9th over saw Henderson and Collins pickup the attack. Henderson’s canny variable paced balls kept his victims guessing and was rewarded by the vital wicket of Pitson in the 11th over, with Collins bowling Gallimore two overs later. This brought the opener Cooke and Welsh together who forged a good partnership of 56 and were starting to up the run rate when Collins bowled Cooke on 55. Runs slowed and Sonning Common eventually ended their 35 overs, setting Swyncombe a target of 123 runs for victory.

In the 4th over Goodall edge a ball only to hit the Sonning Common wicket keeper on the helmet, but good reactions at slip had him caught off the bowling of L Gallimore. Unfortunately for Sonning Common this brought together Domnick and Hope who went about building a match winning partnership of 77 runs. After Domnick fell to C Gallimore on 37 runs, Cann gave Sonning Common some encouragement with two cheap Swyncombe wickets, leaving Swyncombe on 85 for 4. For the second week in a row Trinder took to the crease bullishly partnering with Hope to secure the Swyncombe win.

Swyncombe have finally claimed the Ron Vines Cup for the first time in the 5th Year of this annual competition between the two neighbouring sides.

Swyncombe lost the toss and were asked to bat. Nettlebed’s opening bowling cousins Ryan and Jack Latter applied good early pressure, with Jack taking the wicket of Goodall in the 4th over. This brought Domnick and Hope together who skillfully built a partnership of 95, before Hope was superbly caught by M Challis at Mid wicket, off the bowling of Vockins. Domnick carried on for an additional 5 over’s, eventually be caught off the bowling of Challis for 74 runs. The wickets of Trinder and Hunt fell cheaply and Nettlebed’s confidence started to grow. As Johnston and Collins met in the middle, both knew runs were urgently needed if Swyncombe were going to set a defendable 40 over total. Nettlebed were set a total of 170 runs to win after an expensive last over costing 17 runs.

Nettlebed knew that patiently seeing off the opening Swyncombe bowlers and building a steady total was crucial to maintain their 100% record in the cup. The game couldn’t have been more finely balanced with Nettlebed matching Swyncombe 78 runs after 24 over’s. The only thing Nettlebed hadn’t planned on was Domnick reserving his inform bowlers for the latter stages of the match. Thrifty bowling from Hope and Trinder slowed the run rate, which was followed by Johnston and Collins ripping through the Nettlebed batting line up, eventually taking 7 wickets for 9 runs in 4 overs. Nettlebed eventually relinquished their hold on the cup as the last wicket fell in the 31st over on 102 runs.

The Ron Vines cup was founded in 2005 in memory of Ron Vines who was a lifelong cricket fan, farm manager of Ewelme Estate and Chairman of Swyncombe Parish for many years. His four sons all played for Swyncombe and Nettlebed and Ron’s grandchildren have all followed in his love of cricket.

Highmoor won the toss and elected to bat, on a firm, well structured wicket, that might remind some of us of a rather young Chateaux Eschazeaux: tasty and you can appreciate that it is firm, but could do with a bit more time to soften out and achieve its fullest glories. This was to be a physical and eagerly contested match, where both sides put full-bodies on the line in defense of runs, but where a 5 prong pace attack won out over a slower more steady line up.

Wells and Taylor put on a steady opening partnership of 63 – coincidently a good year in Port country – Hope and Hunt coming up against some rather staunch defensive nerdeling. A slow start for Highmoor off of their first 14 overs: no more that 3 runs per over, except the one where Hope went for 12. A change of bowling brought some tricky left arm swing from Johnston, and from the 20th over of the game, in cahoots with Collins from the other end, these two bowlers made way through Highmoor middle order, five wickets falling over five consecutive overs: Wells caught by Hope for 15, bowled Johnston; Lovelock’s off stump taken by a 1er Cru Jaffa from Collins; Maul, caught & bowled, Johnston; Stephens, caught in a remarkable low catch by Hope at tight mid-wicket, bowled Collins; Mayers, caught behind by Domnick, bowled Johnston. Classy like Champagne.

That rampage brought Harris into the game, batting at number 7, and rather in the style of an Australian Shiraz: big, brash and upfront, but getting along with a remarkable amount of the dishes being served up at the Jerk BBQ. Taylor and Harris proceeded to put on a rather more urgent 54. That was Hunt’s call to do a little more than gardening at third man, as he proceeded to take down the opposition’s boundary fence. Taylor was soon caught & bowled for an unfortunate 49 by Trinder, who also had Saunders wicket, caught by Johnston (in the deep and over the shoulder), for a duck. Harris’s Shiraz innings eventually fell to Hope’s insistence for a wicket in the last over before tea, caught & bowled for 41, setting Swyncombe a chase of 137 runs total.

Swyncombe set about the target with aplomb after a notable tea. Goodall was first to go – run out for 19. Domnick followed – bowled by Mayers for 17. Hope and Trinder then proceeded to put together a partnership of 80 runs, taking Swyncombe to a match-winning position. Hope hit 57 in emphatic style and was joined by Johnston for a cameo of 4 runs when Trinder took one too many, run out for 39. Mayers was the most notable of Highmoor’s bowlers, with good line and length balls off a short run.

In the kind of weather one might imagine on the very edge of a thunderstorm, a credit to the cricketeering folk of Ipsden and Swyncombe, who entered into a game this Sunday in good spirits.

Ipsden won the toss and put Swyncombe into bat. A rather smart choice as three maiden overs and a fourth wicket maiden saw Goodall fall to the zippy line and length balls of M Hughdon; caught behind for a duck. C Domnick proceeded to make useful runs and some nice shots were seen on his way to 32; eventually bowled by Tustian. Collins and Johnston made themselves the other key wickets, falling to Houseman and M Hughdon; whose eventual figures of 4 wickets for 14 runs with 3 maidens from 7 overs, helped restrict Swyncombe to an innings total of 105.

Ipsden’s openers Wood and Cox were the main batting force and put on a quick fire 29 when the first of their two key wickets saw Wood fall to Goodall’s flighty yet tempting spin; caught wanting on the boundary for a useful 23. Cox continued to defend his wicket and batted down through the order whilst Trinder kept his partners coming and the runs tight with eventual figures of 4 wickets for 11 runs 1 maiden from 7 overs. Cue the second key wicket of Cox for 42; bowled three unplayable balls of real pace by Collins, the third of which saw Cox off with cries of “That were too good for thee, Lad”, set up and bowled top of off stump.

Swyncombe kept pressure on Ipsden through the course of their innings, with some good fielding and some smart changes in the attack, eventually restricting Ipsden to a final score of 95 runs.

Swyncombe proved to be too strong for St Clement’s Strollers as they cruised to a nine wicket win. Swyncombe dismissed St Clements for just 73 in their innings and then strolled to a comfortable win on 77-1

Swyncombe were on top from the moment they won the toss and put St Clements in to bat. Ben Henderson and Ian Hunt both managed to get bounce and swing with movement off the seam, with Henderson finishing with 4 -13 from his opening five-over spell. Clive Goodall and Ian Hunt chipped in with a wicket apiece as the Strollers were reduced to 26-6.

The St Clements tail offered some resistance as Warry added 26 runs before being caught by Nigel Trinder off the bowling of Gary Joynes. However, Joynes claimed the last wicket to finish with figures of 2-1 as the 10 man St Clements were bowled out for 73.

The total never looked like being enough to trouble Swyncombe despite the early loss of skipper Clive Domnick for 9. Clive Goodall (33no) and Nigel Trinder (30no) eventually saw them home to victory in the 21st over.

Nettlebed won the toss and put Swyncombe in to bat for their last match of the season. Jack and Ryan Latter bowled an excellent line and length in their opening spell keeping the runs to a minimum. Goodall went in the 8th over when trying to hit Ryan Latter over mid wicket, but the ball couldn’t beat Challis, who took an excellent catch. Domnick patiently built an innings partnering briefly with Collins and then Hope who both went cheaply off the bowling of Challis, until his innings came to an unfortunate end, as he slipped on the damp surface and pirouetted on to his stumps, after hitting the ball down to fine leg. When Swyncombe have needed an innings steadying this year, the patient batting of Hunt has usually provided the stability, partnering with Trinder, Johnston and then Percival Swyncombe eventually reached 116 for 6 off their 35 overs. Based on the conditions and their experiences during the season Swyncombe were confident of defending the low total and continuing their unbeaten season.

Swyncombe bowlers knew they had their work cut out and Hope delivered a wicket maiden in the first over, taking the wicket of R Simmons, caught at mid-off by Regent. Partnered by Trinder the opening spell of 8 overs only yielded 9 runs for Nettlebed. Collins and Johnston took over the attack and Collins took the important wickets of P Simmons and Young. The early wickets exposed the young Nettlebed bowling attack who offered resistance but few runs and as the match went into the last 10 overs Trinder and Percival bowled excellently under pressure, picking off wickets and leaving Nettlebed a total of 10 runs off the last over with only one wicket remaining. The Nettlebed opener Vockins still remained having batted well for 55 and with Butler an injured Nettlebed opener, batting at 11 facing the inform Hope the match could go either way. A short first ball was dispatched for 6 and Hope now needed to bowl the most accurate 5 balls of the season. A rushed 2 runs left Nettlebed requiring two runs for victory off the final ball. Butler drove the ball to silly mid off and a scrambled throw missed the stumps and allowed Nettlebed to tie the match.
Swyncombe’s second tie of the season left them undefeated both at Home and Away in 2011.

The last match of the season also delivered the final lovingly prepared Dot Ackerman tea. Dot spent her childhood years in Swyncombe, later residing in Nettlebed. She has seen young players grow up and watch their own children play and eat her teas over a period of over 30 years. Her teas will be missed by us all.

Swyncombe won the toss and elected to bat in this 40 over match. A superb batting wicket on a glorious day in the Chilterns gave Swyncombe every opportunity to score some good runs.  The partnership of 171 runs by Goodall and Bailey put Swyncombe in a commanding position. Goodall added another 50 runs with Hope finishing 13 runs shy of his century. With plenty of wickets in hand Hope and Percival’s flamboyant batting display added 104 runs in the last 10 overs, setting Old Suttonians a target of 287 runs.

Old Suttonians started briskly and after 10 overs matched the Swyncombe score at the same over period, but Old Suttonians hadn’t prepared for Keith Domnick, a 15 year old Gillott’s student, ripping through the Old Suttonians batting order to leave him on figures of 8 overs 3 maidens, 4 wickets for 11 runs. A dropped catch by Regent denied the young spinner a 5 wicket haul. Not to be out done, his father cleaned up the Old Suttonians’ tail taking 3 wickets for 10 runs. Day took the last wicket to end their innings on 103 all out. A fantastic bowling performance from father and son.
